Snow throwers and terrain

Picking a snow thrower that’s suited to specific landscaping and environmental conditions can be more challenging than one might imagine. If the wrong machine is purchased, you could end up having to work much harder than you’d intended. Snow throwers are supposed to make winter life easier, right?

To help with making an informed decision, consider the following factors and scenarios to ensure you get the best performance from your chosen snow thrower.

Small lot size and light snow

If you live in a townhouse-style development or a small bungalow with very little pavement to clear, chances are an electric or single-stage gas snow thrower will satisfy your snow removal needs. Short driveways, small walking paths and tiny sidewalks are ideal for this level of machinery. Keep in mind electric snow throwers are typically less powerful than their single-stage gas-run counterparts. Both, however, are easy to operate and store with their smaller size – something that comes in handy when only being used minimally.

With electric snow throwers’ limited power capabilities, they are best suited for weather conditions that receive lower snow accumulations, such as West Coast and interior British Columbia. Those living in geographical locales that receive higher amounts of snowfall – like the Prairies and mountainous terrains – might want to narrow their buying decisions to gas-powered varieties. In the event of a heavy snowfall, an electric snow thrower will likely require multiple passes to complete the job.

Larger lot size, wide driveway and powdery snow

Homeowners with bigger yards, driveways and sidewalks will want to consider a two-stage, gas-powered snow blower. A two-stage snow blower shoots snow farther than electric and single-stage machines, is quite manoeuvrable and can handle denser precipitation – thereby reducing physical strain. If you live in a location that typically receives higher amounts of snowfall, then a two-stage snow blower will do the job quickly and efficiently.

Huge lot size, enormous driveway and wet/heavy snow

Owning a sprawling estate can be a great luxury – except when you have to do all the maintenance! Those who reside on acreages, farms and other living spaces of generous proportions will likely need to stick with three-stage snow blowers. In many of these types of home environments, roadways and driveways are not paved. Three-stage snow blowers will clear snow on both gravel and paved surfaces. They’re also wider than other varieties of snow removal machines, requiring less passes one has to make.

Additionally, individuals who live in regions that typically receive more than six inches of snowfall per storm will want to consider these higher performing machines. With their more powerful engines and sophisticated interior workings, three-stage snow blowers are better equipped to tackle really heavy and wet snow.

On a single-stage snow thrower, an auger directs the snow straight through a discharge chute. With two- and three-stage snow blowers, an auger collects the snow and a fan then discharges it through a chute, which throws snow faster and farther than a single-stage snow thrower.

Don’t get snowed

With the right type of snow removal machinery, winter doesn’t have to be such a chore. So if you’re in the market for a snow thrower, doing your research is key. For more information, see your local Co-op Home Centre and our experts will be happy to help you make the right choice for your needs.
