Is your RV winter-ready?

Labour Day long weekend signifies the end of Summer and time to start winterizing your RV, camper, and cabin.

CO-OP® Gold Plumbing Winterizer has been specifically formulated to protect and prevent freeze damage down to -50 C in drains and fresh-water lines in septic systems, boats, recreational vehicles, seasonal homes and swimming pool filtration systems. Made in Canada, it is completely non-toxic, and when used as directed, it is not harmful to the environment.

It is important to ensure proper winterization of your recreational vehicles, boats, vacation homes and other seasonal dwellings.

Drain Pipes and Fixtures

Drain water from the systems. Apply compressed air through the pipes, keeping pressure less than 20lbs/sq in to prevent any damage. (For smaller systems, use a wet/dry vacuum on blower setting). Open each faucet to allow compressed air to force water out of the line.

Install a water heater bypass system

A water heater bypass helps to reduce the amount of antifreeze needed and protects the parts of the system exposed to freeze damage. With a bypass loop containing valves at each end, the water system is isolated from the heater tank. That allows antifreeze to be pumped into the system without having to first fill the tank with antifreeze. Make sure your system can accommodate the normal expansion of RV antifreeze that occurs during winter storage. NEVER use automotive antifreeze to winterize the system.

Care should be taken to make sure as much water as possible is drained from the plumbing system before adding Premium RV Plumbing Antifreeze. Dilution caused by water remaining in traps and pipes will reduce the level of burst protection.

Choose the right Antifreeze

To avoid system damage, it is important to choose the antifreeze suitable for the type of pipes in your system.

Premium Plumbing Antifreeze -50°C is an ethanol-based, non-toxic and low-odor formulation, safe for winterizing all metal and plastic piping systems.

Following these tips will help ensure safe winterization of your RV water systems. Always be sure to check and follow any specific instructions provided by the equipment manufacturer.

Winter maintenance

Plumbing antifreeze does not have a definite freeze point but will turn thick and viscous as the temperature drops and will not expand as water does. For this reason it is correct to refer to “burst protection” rather than freeze point. When used undiluted, Recochem’s formula provides burst protection down to -50°C.

Spring maintenance

In the spring, drain and flush out the antifreeze from your water system with clean water into a container. Dispose of the liquid properly in accordance with municipal laws and regulations. When the system is completely flushed, close the drains and recharge with clean water.

Proper storing of antifreeze jugs is important to avoid spillage and ensure the safety of people or animals that may come in contact with the antifreeze. If spilled, our products will have little effect in polluting ground and surface water.
