Often, style and organization go hand in hand. When things are in place, they typically look nicer. You can find a variety of closet organization systems at our Co-op Home Centres to fit all of your organizational needs — whether you need a solution for a small closet or a spacious walk-in.
Learn about some of our favourite unique ways to organize and style closet space below.
Islands, Chaise Lounges or Ottomans
If you have a roomy walk-in closet, consider adding a piece of furniture to your space. An island will give you more shelving and counter space to organize your clothing. A chaise lounge, chair or ottoman can add personality and provide an area to sit while you dress.
Jewellery Wall
Pegboards are a versatile organizational tool that can be customized to match the rest of your decor. Obviously, necklaces and earrings can be hung on hooks but pegboards have a lot more potential. Get crafty by attaching pegs to the back of a flat ring display — you can often find these in old jewellery boxes or second-hand stores. You can use hot glue to attach the pegs, just make sure you evenly distribute the weight amongst a few different pegs. Try attaching pegs to a small mirror or large dowels for watches.
To create your jewellery wall, start by picking up a pegboard, accessories and spray paint from your local Co-op Home Centre. To customize your board, place a drop cloth in a well-ventilated area and spray your board. While you’re spraying, move your arm in steady, even horizontal lines. Next, paint your board’s accessories. Let everything dry fully before adding a second coat.
Glass Doors
Glass closet doors not only look sophisticated and elegant but they also provide a transparent view into what’s inside your closet. This has two organizational benefits: you can see exactly what’s inside your closet without rummaging through it (or even opening the door), and you’ll have the added motivation of keeping it organized.
Alternatively, if you wanted a look similar to glass doors without showing off what’s inside, you could use sliding mirrored doors, instead. The effect is similar to glass and will give your room the illusion of looking larger.
Lighting
Installing custom lighting for your closet can be a huge organizational help. Lighting those dark nooks and crannies will open up the space, encouraging you to use all corners of your closet. It can also look nice, which is helpful if you’ve gone with glass doors or, alternatively, no doors.
Plants
If you have space, a piece of greenery can liven up your closet space. Choose a hanging plant that does well in low-light, like a pothos.
Colour Code Your Clothing
If you’re looking for a way to organize and style your closet without buying anything new or using tools of any kind, try colour-coding your clothing. It looks great and, functionally, it’s an organizational dream. When you can’t remember where something is, you can still remember what colour it is. And, it can help you choose an outfit on the fly — just grab a few complementing colours off your rack!
Crates with Castors
Use the space underneath your hanging clothes without sacrificing style by transforming a simple crate. Store seasonal or little-used items in these — they’ll be tucked out of the way but accessible when you need them. Be sure to add the castors on the bottom for ease of use. We suggest labelling each crate with what you’re intending to store, such as summershoes or winter hats. That way, there will be no confusion as to where your favourite, seasonal items are.
