Types of Ladders

Stepladder

The most common type of ladders, stepladders are a fixed length allowing for free-standing use for a variety of projects. The self-supporting A-frame can be used anywhere making them handy for any household task or interior project.

Extension Ladder

This two-piece, adjustable straight ladder has one stationary piece and one extendable piece that can slide up or down to create a taller ladder with greater reach. The extendable two-piece structure allows for efficient storage too! Ideal for gaining access to hard-to-reach places like your roof or high exterior walls.

Step-stool

Compact and easy-to-store step-stools are perfect for everyday tasks. Their one, two or three steps are ideal for helping you reach higher cupboards and shelves.

Ladder Material

Make sure your ladder is made of a material that is right for the job at hand. Choosing between aluminum, fibreglass and wood should come down to the specific job and your own safety.

ALUMINUM: lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and great for indoor or outdoor uses. Ideal for using around the house for painting jobs, but not for use when working around electricity.

FIBREGLASS: corrosion-resistant for indoor/outdoor use, and extremely durable and resistant to the elements. For use when working around electricity with its non-conductive side rails.

WOOD: only for inside use and when working around electricity, as it’s mostly non-conductive (check for metal fasteners).

Ladder Load

A load rating is the recommended total weight that can be carried by the ladder. This includes the weight of the user plus any tools, materials or accessories that the user takes up the ladder. See the chart below to see what load rating is suitable for you and your DIY needs.

Ladder Height

Choosing the right ladder also comes down to the needed reach. How to calculate the right length for you is dependent on the type of ladder you’re using. The highest safe standing level on a stepladder is two steps from the top and four rungs down from the top on an extension ladder.
