Your exterior door can make a dramatic impact on the appearance of your home. An accent door is a great opportunity to showcase a bold colour that ties everything together. Follow the tips below to complete your dream door project!
Choosing your colour
Consider the style of your home and your personal preferences when selecting a door colour. A hot pink door may clash with classic Victorian architecture and gather much attention. But it can work if you’re comfortable with it and it matches your personal style. Other inspiration may be drawn from aspects around your home – from wood, brick or even landscaping.
Test two to three colours by taping chips to your door, looking at them in different light throughout the day. You’ll be surprised by how much colours can differ at different times and in different weather – sunny versus cloudy.
Type of paint
Once you have chosen your perfect shade, purchase it in an exterior paint. Exterior paint is designed to withstand the elements, including sun, snow and rain. Latex or water-based acrylic paint will be your best choice. You will also be asked what kind of finish you would like. A glossy finish is the most common choice for an exterior door. The hard, shiny finish will make the door’s details stand out while being less prone to chipping.
Prepping your door
Begin by taking off all the hinges and hardware, tape off the glass and wash your door with a damp cloth to remove any dirt. Next, repair any holes or cracks with a small amount of caulking. Smooth out any imperfections on the door, starting with 120-grit sandpaper and finishing with 220-grit sandpaper. Finally, thoroughly clean your door and let dry completely.
Mastering your technique
Before applying any primer or paint, ensure the air temperature is a minimum of 10 C. Start with your primer – this can be either a white or tinted product depending on the colour you have chosen. After your primer is completely dry, and you are ready to apply your first colour coat, take a sash paintbrush over all the details as this will help with coverage. For the remainder of the door, use a three- to six-inch roller with a nap less than 3/8 inches. Paint two or more coats to reach your desired colour.
Generating curb appeal
Painting an exterior door is a project that is often neglected. However, with a relatively modest investment of both time and money, it can pay off in a big way. An accent door will enhance your home’s curb appeal and create a bold colour contrast that reflects your personal style.
