Go Green with Eco Care

At Co-op, we know the environment is important to our customers. It’s important to us as well, which is why we’re excited to introduce our new Eco Care Program.

Co-op is helping you find responsibly sourced products to lessen environmental impacts. Items stamped with the Eco Care logo match criteria set by at least one third-party certification relating to energy efficiency, responsibly sourced materials, water conservation and air quality. This includes certifications such as Energy Star, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), WaterSense and UL Certified.

Watch for items tagged with the Eco Care logo in the Co-op Home Centre flyer and on shelves in Co-op Home Centres. Embracing green products such as those listed below will not only help protect the environment, but may also help you to save money at home.

LED bulbs

LED bulbs are best known for their energy efficiency, safety features and longevity, which in turn offer a great investment for your home. LED bulbs use up to 90 per cent less power than their incandescent counterparts and can last for seven years – all of which add up to big savings. Additionally, they are a safe alternative as they do not generate heat, thereby reducing the likelihood of a fire that can have devastating effects.

Water-reducing amenities

Dual-flush toilets have been increasing in popularity over the past several years due to their economical and environmental benefits. A dual-flush toilet gives two flush options, using a maximum of six litres per flush. This lower flow helps to cut down on water consumption and reduces your water bill. There’s a misconception that because these toilets use less water they don’t work as efficiently as standard varieties. However, since they use a strong suction action you will have a low-maintenance toilet with a much smaller environmental footprint.

Showering can take up a large portion of a family’s water bill. A regular showerhead can use 20 to 30 litres of water per minute, while a low-flow showerhead uses less than half that amount. These showerheads are often seen as having weaker water pressure. But do not fret, many use air to give you the same pressure while cutting down on consumption.

Heating and cooling

Your attic space is often the last thing on your mind, but it can add more dollars to your heating and cooling bill if it’s not properly insulated. Blown-in insulation is often made of recycled materials and is a great solution in making your attic air tight and eco-friendly. The tight seal created from blown-in insulation also makes it more resistant to mould and rust, creating a healthier indoor air environment.

Furnaces and air conditioners are essential in providing a comfortable living space. Wi-fi thermostats allow you to adjust the temperature while you’re away and may use technology to automatically adjust temperatures. These features allow you to keep your home the ideal temperature at any time, while avoiding unnecessary use of the furnace and air conditioner when away.

Let’s all do our part

It is our responsibility to preserve our natural resources for years to come. Using Eco Care products can help you do just that, all while putting more change back in your pocket.
