Concrete Solutions

Concrete provides a beautiful and durable finish for driveways, garage floors, walking paths and patios. Many concrete projects can be undertaken by the homeowner as a DIY project with the right products and the right tools.

Over time concrete can deteriorate, and if not checked early can lead to costly repairs or the need for complete replacement. Avoid costly replacement projects with regular ongoing maintenance.

Three of the most common problems with concrete surfaces are spalling, pitting and cracking.

L to R: Spalling, Pitting, Cracking

Spalling

Spalling will usually cause the surface of the floor to crumble or separate in thin layers. Spalling generally occurs in cold winter climates that subject the concrete to the freeze thaw cycle. When water is deposited on a garage floor it works its way into the capillaries of the concrete. When the water freezes, it expands and causes microscopic damage to the surrounding concrete. Over a few winters this constant damage weakens the surface and as a result, it starts to separate or crumble.

Pitting

Pitting is smaller, deeper holes that have a more distinct jagged look. Pitting can be caused from improper finishing of the concrete, an inadequate mix, improper use of an accelerator or even old age. Over time road salts and deicing fluids can accelerate the problem because it will allow the water more time to penetrate deeper into the concrete before it freezes.

Cracking

Cracking can be caused by everything from tree roots, movement of the subsoil due to freeze and thaw cycles in winter, or inadequate support and reinforcement within the concrete itself when originally poured. The severity of cracking will increase and cracks will “run” across the surface.

Regardless of the source of your concrete repair need, it is important to restore and repair the surface quickly so further deterioration does not lead to costly repairs or total replacement.

Projects

Many concrete projects such as sidewalks, small concrete slabs, or concrete lawn borders are within the ability of the home handyman. Preparation and planning is key, but with innovative and simple to use concrete products, the project becomes manageable.
