Help Clients Choose the Right Interior Door

Interior doors, while often overlooked by contractor and customer alike, play an important role in both the functionality and design of a home. When building a new home or renovating an existing one, it is important to have conversations with the homeowners and keep interior doors top of mind. To help you and your clients choose the right doors for their needs, you should consider the following:

What is the end goal?

What are the required functions of each room and are there unique needs? Consider noise, frequency of use, privacy and aesthetics.

How do you want the door to look and operate?

  • Hinged/Pre-hung doors

Hinged doors are mounted to a frame and swing in or out. Pre-hung doors are already attached to a frame that simply need to be put into place. These are perfect for making small spaces into offices.

  • Barn doors

Barn doors are seen and installed for their visual beauty, style enhancement and space efficiency – as they slide and don’t swing in and out. While visually appealing, they are not the best option for noise control.

  • Pocket doors

Pocket doors hide away in the wall and take up no additional space. These are great options for opening to a small space like a mudroom or powder room.

  • Bifold doors

Bifold doors fold back compactly like an accordion, giving a full wall feel when they’re closed. Bifold doors are typically used for closets.

  • French doors

French doors are a pair of hinged doors that open out and meet in the middle. They offer a grand feeling and are an excellent choice to enhance the feel of a room and make it feel larger. French doors are a great way to increase the flow of light through the home. The increased flow of light that French doors can provide helps to reduce energy consumption.

Picking the material

No matter what material is chosen (wood, MDF or glass), they all have the ability to bring beauty to your client's home. When considering what substrate to use, reflect back on the unique needs of each room as each material performs differently.

  • Wood doors

Wooden doors are your best option for sound insulation.

  • MDF

MDF doors are durable, budget-friendly and available in a wide array of designs.

  • Glass

Glass doors increase the visual space of rooms, making them seem larger and allow for more natural light.

Picking the design

  • Modern design

This design style is characterized by clean, straight lines in any direction, that are used to create dimension and draw your eye to establish a mood.

  • Transitional design

A contemporary style that mixes modern and traditional styles.

  • Traditional design

Inspired by 18th- and 19th-century design styles, a traditional interior design scheme is timeless and placeless, comfortable and put together but not overly fancy.

Picking a colour

Colour has a significant impact on how a door relates to the space and décor. As modern design gains in popularity, more Canadians are choosing bolder colour choices to add personality – especially greys, blues, greens and natural wood tones.
