Choosing the right power tools for your home

As a homeowner, you might find the number of DIY projects seemingly endless. With all the different power tools on the market, it can be overwhelming trying to figure out which ones you really need to tackle these jobs.

Having the right power tool can make all the difference when it comes to the amount of time spent on a project and how professional the finished product looks. Here are a few power tools that are must-haves for any homeowner’s tool box.

Cordless drill:

A drill should be at the top of any power tool shopping list – especially one that is cordless because it will provide full mobility as you move throughout the rooms in your home. They are great for putting up shelves, hanging paintings or mirrors, building furniture and more. The cordless drill batteries do need to be charged, however, battery technology has come a long way with many holding a charge for up to 18 hours.

Jigsaw:

This small saw is easy to store and provides enough power to cut through plastic, tile, plywood, carpet and metal. Using an up-and-down motion, a jigsaw can make circular, curved and straight cuts.

Mitre saw:

A mitre saw has a blade mounted to a swinging arm that will move left and right to produce up to 90-degree angle cross cuts and mitre cuts. This saw will help you speed up the cutting process when working on crown moulding, doorways, baseboards and window casings.

Nail gun:

A nail gun is a huge time-saver for any project. Instead of having to hold your material with one hand while setting up the nail with the other, you will be able to secure everything in one fluid action. Your nailer will also provide more of a professional look by preventing splitting materials. There are various types of nail guns to choose from based on the requirements of any given project, such as framing, roofing, flooring, finishing and brad nailers.

Oscillating tool:

An oscillating tool uses a variety of accessories that are powered with small and fast vibrations.  Attachments can be easily interchanged to sand corners, remove grout, scrape paint and cut wood.  Oscillating tools are ideal for small or fine cuts.

Wet/dry shop vac:

Your power tools are bound to make a mess. A wet/dry shop vac can tackle any mess, including saw dust, scattered bolts and liquid spills. This tool will help you clean up finished projects quickly and easily.

Power tools can be a great asset in your home. The right ones will save you time and leave you with quality work. Try to select tools that are multi-purpose in nature and will be used frequently. And as your tool box continues to grow you can start to consider other tools that provide more specific applications.
