But what considerations do you need to make to ensure you have the right paint product for the job? Consider the following selections in finding the perfect paint to suit your lifestyle.

Mildew resistant

From bathtub steam to shower spray, bathrooms contain a lot of moisture, making it important to protect your walls from mildew. Ensure you select paint that provides this much-needed protection so that over time your drywall doesn’t build up moisture and mildew.   

Ideal sheen

Selecting a satin or semi-gloss sheen is the best option for a bathroom. You need a sheen that is easy to wash yet repels moisture. If you go with too flat of a sheen it will not repel water. On the flipside, if you go with too high of a gloss it will show every imperfection in the drywall. 

Paint and primer in one

Bathrooms can be tricky spaces to paint because there are so many nooks and crannies to work in, as well as a lot of edging that needs to be done. As such, consider choosing a paint-and-primer-in-one product. With this option you will need to paint fewer coats, making your painting experience much simpler.    

Low VOC

Bathrooms are typically smaller rooms, so consider paint with lower VOCs (volatile organic compounds). VOCs create air pollution, and air pollution specifically in your bathroom is not healthy. Paint products with low VOCs will help reduce the chemical and environmental health risks to you and your family.

Colour selection

Often people think that since bathrooms are smaller rooms they cannot paint them darker colours, or that they shouldn’t use any colour at all. This is not true. First, look at how you use the bathroom. If it is a powder room only, feel free to paint it any colour you desire and how dark you want. Typically, in powder rooms you are not shaving or putting on make-up, which requires a brighter space. If it is a family bathroom, you can still add colour with paint, but be careful how dark you go.
